Randy's music training began at the age of five on the piano. He bought his
first guitar for a $1.00 from a classmate in 4th grade and learned to strum
at the feet of his father. Although Randy started young, it was not until
he heard Big Band Jazz for the first time as a teen in Northern California
that the fire of music truly lit his soul.
Randy attended BYU
on a music scholarship, and soon found his place in the recording studio. A
combination of technical aptitudes and musical capabilities helped him quickly
find work in several studios in Salt Lake City as a Recording Engineer. His
ears were well respected in the music community. But engineering was just a
skill Randy used to get his foot in the door...his true desire was to
compose, arrange, and produce music. So, he did...
Randy helped
several artists in various capacities with their respective musical
efforts, with credits on dozens of CDs throughout his career (see Credits /
Artists). More recently, he has worked with artists Michael Dowdle, Sam
Cardon, Kurt Bestor, and Kim Bracken on live or recording projects. Some of
his projects lately have also included original music scores for "Book
Trailers" for various authors.
Randy is often
asked what instrument he plays. He always struggles with the question because
he is equally competent on stringed instruments (Guitar, Bass, Mandolin,
etc) and on piano/ keyboards. He is often hired to do both in live
performances...even at the same time.
Randy's music
preferences are very eclectic in nature. He loves old school funk, R&B,
Jazz, and Folk and often finds his compositions and arrangements sharing
many of these musical elements. His classical training has also allowed him
to compose for orchestras and choirs. There are even days when Randy sounds
"a little bit country..."
